Folding doors are becoming increasingly common in residential projects, both large and small. Today, flexibility is key, and the answer lies not in plasterboard but in kinematics. The most interesting feature of textile folding doors in homes is their ability to open and close off spaces according to the needs of daily living. It is not a matter of aesthetics for its own sake: it works because it meets a practical need for the daily transformation of space.

The mechanism behind textile folding doors allows spaces to be separated without the space-consuming issues typical of traditional doors. No opening radius, no chairs to move to let the door swing past. It is precisely this flat, space-saving design that makes folding doors comparable to additional walls – but ones that can be moved. Whilst they can be fitted within existing walls, it is also possible to install them without any building work, simply using ceiling-mounted or fully recessed tracks: in this case, the time- and cost-saving advantage lies in the installation.

There is no single way to use textile folding doors, but there are specific solutions for every layout challenge. They can be used to divide a large space such as an open-plan area or a living area, particularly those with an elongated layout. Another classic, yet always effective, use is to separate the living area from the kitchen with a system that allows you to decide when it is best to close or open this partition, blocking out smells and noise only when necessary.

It is the ideal solution for tackling tricky areas in the home, such as alcoves where you need to find space for a laundry area. The same principle works within a room, such as a bedroom, to create a bespoke wardrobe or walk-in wardrobe without making the space feel cramped.

Folding doors also evoke an oriental style, inspired by the traditional room-dividing systems found in Japanese homes, the classic shoji. But whilst paper is the material typically associated with this aesthetic, today these panels are available in a variety of materials, such as textiles, which allow the level of visual and acoustic screening to be adjusted with pinpoint precision.
